Career in Merchant Navy - DNS or Bsc

Hello Friends,

My name is Nitin and i am from Chandigarh. I have some questions regarding career in Merchant Navy which i hope will be answered by the experienced members of this helpfull forum.

I am 24 years old. I don't have graduation. I would like to  join MN as a Deck Officer/Cadet. So first question:- What is the best course or path to join it. DNS or B. Sc.? I don't want to do engg. as i am not interested in that.

A friend of mine told me that there is too much rush in the DNS program because everyone was opting for it in the past and roaming jobless but now the DNS can be only joined if the student is sponsored by a company. He also told me that even the CET conducted by IMU is only for sponsored students. Is that true?

If the above is true and if i should join DNS then what are the best companies which provide sponsorship at present and how to go about it?

  2. It is true that they colleges conducting DNS or even BSc Nautical science are unable to place the cadets and yes most of them are still searching for company. I am unaware about the CET part and will have to check on that.
  
  3. Most companies advertise about their requirement of Cadet in newspapers and you need to keep track of that. Please apply to the companies when they advertise for cadets. As for the best company, I think any company which sponsors you and place you onboard to complete the seatime is best for you. Just remember that the Marine Company should have a valid RPSL number, a list of which could be found at www.jahajee.com/shipping-companies/

  What are the newspapers on which companies advertise the most. Should i also check Employement News?

  Mostly its the newspaper which has good circulation like Times of India, Telegraph, Hindu etc. It is difficult to quote in general but newspaper which gets printed in metropolitan are certainly targeted. Best of luck.
