merchant navy as a career

I have completed my btech mechanical and want to join merchant navy, and for that looking up for good GME college.
but the problem is nowadays after reading so many review of some people or seafarers regarding tough life of seafarers made me to think twice.
but, as i always wanted to take it up as a career, I still feel somewhere that i should go for it, coz the condition for land...
