    How Google Webmaster Sitemap can help your Website ?

    0

    Google Webmaster Sitemap are files which can tell the Google bot or crawler about the links of your website. This facilitates Google to index your website pages which you want to be added to Google.

    While Google can accept sitemap in various formats but there is a sitemap protocol defined for sitemaps. Don't worry, protocol simply means in a particular format so if you write your sitemap in format defined for every search engine you have better chances of getting added in various search engines like Bing and Yahoo (who is friend of Bing now !).

    Let us see how is Google Webmaster sitemap created and added to Google Webmaster. For simplicity sake, the sitemap we will create will add only links for webpages and we are not including picture or video links.

    Let us assume that I want my last 3 Topic links to be added in Google viz :

    Few things to remember before creating sitemap are :
    a) Sitemap can have maximum 50,000 Links (separate the sitemap into 2 sitemap if it exceeds)
    b) Maximum file size should be 10 MB (separate the sitemap into 2 sitemap if it exceeds)
    c) Text Sitemap to be in UTF-8 encoding only.
    d) Specify complete Url including http:// or https://

    For this post I have deliberately uploaded 2 sitemap. 1st is in text format and is the easiest to make while 2nd is in xml format and follows the sitemap protocol. You can find the sitemap at :
    www.jahajee.com/e/sitemap-1.txt
    www.jahajee.com/e/sitemap-1.xml

      X CREATING GOOGLE WEBMASTER SITEMAP IN TEXT FORMAT
      0

      1) Open any text editor programs like Notepad
      2) Add each complete link in a separate line (with http:// or https:// as the case may be).
      3) Click on "File" and choose "Save As.."
      4) Change Encoding to "UTF-8"
      5) Give "File Name" as you wish, preferably sitemap.txt (remember to give file extension as .txt)
      6) Save the file on Desktop.
      7) Upload the file into the root folder of your server (www or public_html).

        If you have already opened the sitemap-1.xml then view source of the same for better understanding !

        1) Open any text editor programs like Notepad
        2) Add starting two lines as
        <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
        <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">

        3) Add <url><loc> in next line.
        4) Add one complete link (with http:// or https:// as the case may be).
        5) Add </loc></url> in next line.
        6) Repeat step 3 to 5 for each link.
        8) Add </urlset> in the last line
        9) Click on "File" and choose "Save As.."
        10) Give "File Name" as you wish, preferably sitemap.xml (remember to give file extension as .xml)
        11) Save the file on Desktop.
        12) Upload the file into the root folder of your server (www or public_html).

        This simple xml file should do what you want, that is adding your web pages to Google but if you want more control then you can use optional tags like
        <lastmod>
        <changefreq>
        <priority>
        Also remember that the xml format complies with standard sitemap format (read sitemap protocol) and hence can be used with various search Engine crawlers like Bing, Yahoo etc.

        For more details please go through
        www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html and
        http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=183668

        While it is easier and recommended using any online sitemap generator, but still its good to know how to generate sitemap manually. I am using the optional tags also and you can view the sitemap for jahajee.com at www.jahajee.com/sitemap.xml

          X Submitting created sitemap to Search Engines
          0

          Easiest method of submitting the sitemap to search engine is via robots.txt . Simply add near the end of robots.txt :
          Sitemap: https://www.jahajee.com/sitemap.xml
          in my case I kept the name as sitemap.xml but you are free to give any name with xml extension. So when any crawler will crawl your robots.txt they will know the location of your sitemap and also crawl and index that.

          The other method of submitting the created sitemap is using Search Engine Webmaster websites like Google Webmaster Tools to submit your sitemap. I highly recommend this because if your sitemap has any error then Google Webmaster will notify you.
          You can login to your Google Webmaster and once your website is verified you can submit your sitemap under
          Optimization => sitemaps . Click the "ADD/TEST SITEMAP".
          You can test the sitemap and once all ok submit it to Google Webmaster. It will take Google Bot few days to crawl your sitemap and to add the webpages in its Index.
