I have found overwhelming response of candidates to DNS leading to BSc Nautical Science, this course is a great route to gain entry into a field which is quite fascinating and rewarding. Under the present circumstances the course has been altered to some other way than it used to be earlier, hence I would just like to discuss upon the various points which are quite important for each and every individual who is passionate enough to read and understand the things before just jumping into the arena.

I would highlight the course for u:

*Course consists of 6 semesters, and to remove any misconception among the candidates i would like to clarify that the two semesters that you are doing residential as pre sea training i.e DNS
is just a part of the 6 semester programme, you have not finished your course yet.

*After your DNS you will need to complete a minimum of 18 months training (3 semesters ) on SSTP (structured shipboard training programme) here you also need to complete your cadet record book (assignments given) and cadet diary ,onboard trading ships ie FG (Foreign going) for being eligible to second mates examination as an FG candidate. If anyway you are completing the training on various other non-trading ships(eg dredgers, offshore supply etc) NT wing OF DG has special rules for them and time period will be decided accordingly. You will also need to appear for you 3rd,4th and 5th semester exams although it is not compulsory if you don't need a degree, this is also being highlighted here that if you have not cleared your first two semesters you won't be allowed to sit for further exams.

*Later you come back and complete your last semester,a second mate function of 4 months is to be completed along with four advanced STCW 2010 courses and GMDSS course and appear for your second mate examinations, and the same examination will be regarded as your last semester examination ie 6th semester and degree of BSc Nautical Science will be granted simultaneously.

*you have better training as you serve onboard and get trained much better than what you actually learn in the campus of an institute and for any aspiring navigator this is really the true case.

to give you a better picture i will explain you the same with some harsh realities:

* Earlier the Short course was offered only under the sponsorship of a company that too limited seats were available for such a course.

*But eventually they came to such point that this course became a new fashion and everyone just followed up this course and authorities allowed a lot n lot of institutes to offer such a course without any sponsorship to the candidates, market was good and most were getting accepted, sponsorship here refers to such an agreement where a company takes the responsibility of training the cadet onboard their ship.

*With time this trend has led to many and many of cadets passed out from such institutes and roaming around without jobs and falling prey to agents who offer onboard training in secret agreements with the company by taking good amount of money from candidates.

*According to the recent reports this has been clear that majority of cadets passed out under such course in present times are roaming around without a proper onboard training, hence they are to go nowhere, since they don't even have a graduation nor they have completed their course yet.

*Companies sponsoring the candidates under present circumstances are making them to wait for long periods, making this short route course a long route one. average time taken under present period for passing a second mate examination by a DNS cadet has become around 4.5 years.

* Now coming on point of salary, well to clarify the point to you this is not actually salary this is a stipend, the government of India has fixed the minimum stipend to be around 5000 rupees to be paid to cadets while onboard training.

*majority of companies according to a survey are found out to be giving around 200 to 350 $ as their stipend, that is well above the govt. has decided, but point i want to make clear here is, guys never run behind the stipend money, its not your actual salary, don't ever keep in your mind that at least you are earning while your friends are studying somewhere, never run behind success, run behind excellence as said by some great person, success will follow.

*Gentlemen, this field is excellent and its remunerations and perks are high but never ever get lost in the charm of field, always think with your brains open to all, i won't talk about the seasickness, and cheap labor work!! but i want you to know the realities while getting trained for such a profession.

*This is not Defence service, in fact nothing to do with Defence i will say, to clarify the points hard, hence protection of Indian government is also limited to the seafarers working on foreign flags.

*Let me come to the point of piracy and criminalization of seafarers, every year thousands of seafarers are arrested for the crimes which actually they are not responsible for.You can read regarding this on ITF seafarers.

HENCE I WILL REQUEST YOU TO GO FOR A COURSE SUCH AS DNS ONLY AFTER GAINING A PROPER SPONSORSHIP FROM A CERTIFIED COMPANY.

****Please be aware of various points here, this is not to discourage you from joining this extraordinary field but to make you aware of the present conditions, and the factors on which the market works on****

TS CHANAKYA OFFERS A BSC NAUTICAL SCIENCE COURSE,ELIGIBILITY WOULD BE TO OBTAIN MMQM IN IIT-JEE. BITS PILANI  IS ALSO OFFERING THIS COURSE UNDER THEIR OFF CAMPUS COURSES IN TOLANI MARITIME INSTITUTE,SEVERAL OTHER INSTITUTES ALSO OFFER SUCH FULL DEGREE COURSE.

Courses have been very well explained earlier in the various sections of this website, but i have stressed upon
the deck department/navigation dept. since this is the place where the majority of problem is coming with, under the present circumstances particularly with DNS programme.

long waiting periods are dominant even for those candidates who have secured a proper sponsorship,so in either the case you have to be ready for longer waiting periods, this just doesn't mean sitting at home, it means a lot more than that you have to sit at home for a long duration of around 7 months at an average, and here what happens is you start forgetting what you had actually learned during your pre-sea, you may not realize the fact but you forget 70% of what you had learned.

Mind you, can't do another professional course on basis of such a course as DNS, you can't even continue the course or complete your graduation without getting an onboard training. Here is where full degree residential course of BSs Nautical Science or BS Nautical Technology is beneficial to you as you have obtained a graduation before you come into profession.

I will conclude with a point that it is always you and your family who has to decide for your betterment and welfare.
Merchant Marine is excellent field and can give you immense success but you have to work to earn every ounce of it.
