    Largest ship in the world

I know how large a ship is, I have been to Hoogly river, my uncle said. I do not blame him for such statement as ironically there is a very thin line between a boat, yacht and a ship. So before talking about Worlds largest ships lets see how dictionary defines

    • BOAT
a small vessel propelled on water by oars, sails, or an engine.
    • YACHT
a medium-sized sailboat equipped for cruising or racing.
    • SHIP
A vessel larger than a boat for transporting people or goods by sea.
Dare I compare boat vs ship vs yacht and a great article can be read as to why is it difficult to classify them (PDF).

Equally difficult is to define largest ship in the world since comparing different ship types with each other is like comparing apples with oranges. Each Marine Ship is made for different purpose with its own set of limitations. I am also not listing ships which are either scrapped or non-commissioned, thus this list of largest ships in the world includes only ships in service.
