BNWAS-BRIDGE NAVIGATIONAL WATCH ALARM SYSTEM
rajiv_333 asked about Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System and I thought ...hey, we got a vetting remarks for BNWAS and I never went deeper into that. So what is BNWAS or Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System and why was BNWAS required ?
BNWAS was idea of Danish Maritime Authority and they suggested it to monitor bridge activity and to alert the bridge Watchkeeper to reset a particular indicator/alarm. This way the Watchkeeper will be forced to remain alert in their watch even when they are fatigued !! If they do not reset this bridge watch alarm in a particular duration then it would alert another deck officer and/or the captain and if still nobody acknowledges then alerts in full accommodation space. The Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) will hence warn the shipstaff of the incapacity of the watchkeeping officer which may be due to negligence, accident, sickness, fatigue or even security breach (read hijacking).
If not inhibited by the master, the BNWAS should be operational when the ship is in auto-pilot mode.

International Maritime Organization adopted resolution MSC.128(75) on performance standards for bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS). The requirements for the operational sequence and interval for alarms are briefed in the attached picture.
Few additional BNWAS requirements include :
> For ships, other than passenger ships if the 2nd stage audible alarm is sounded in all locations then the 3rd stage audible alarm may be omitted.
> Reset should be possible only from proper lookout area on Bridge.
> Reset shall be done by single operator action and should re-initiate from its full duration after reset.
> Reset could be done by any of the three means :
#1 single operator action from a device forming an integral part of the BNWAS (manually operated button), or
#2 external inputs from other equipment registering physical activity (sensors detecting presence and movement of humans), or
#3 external inputs from other equipment registering mental alertness of the OOW (sensors detecting speech or manual controls of bridge eqipments).
> BNWAS should also have the emergency call facility included.
> Dormant period and the operation of the BNWAS should be controlled only by Master.
> Indication for the malfunction of the device should be there on BNWAS.

after 3 - 12 min of dormant period
15 secs visible alarm on bridge
if not reset
15 secs audible alarm on bridge
if not reset
90 secs audible alarm in back up officer or master's cabin
if not reset
then audible alarm in common space or crew space who can take over the watch
my mates have confusion that in backup officer or master cabin audible alarm is just for 15 secs and not for 90 secs
