BNWAS requirements

International Maritime Organization adopted resolution MSC.128(75) on performance standards for bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS). The requirements for the operational sequence and interval for alarms are briefed in the attached picture.

Few additional BNWAS requirements include :

> For ships, other than passenger ships if the 2nd stage audible alarm is sounded in all locations then the 3rd stage audible alarm may be omitted.

> Reset should be possible only from proper lookout area on Bridge.

> Reset shall be done by single operator action and should re-initiate from its full duration after reset.

> Reset could be done by any of the three means :
  #1 single operator action from a device forming an integral part of the BNWAS (manually operated button), or
  #2 external inputs from other equipment registering physical activity (sensors detecting presence and movement of humans), or
  #3 external inputs from other equipment registering mental alertness of the OOW (sensors detecting speech or manual controls of bridge eqipments).

> BNWAS should also have the emergency call facility included.

> Dormant period and the operation of the BNWAS should be controlled only by Master.

> Indication for the malfunction of the device should be there on BNWAS.BNWAS requirements
