When a crew properly abandons their vessel (on the orders of the master and without hope or expectation of returning to her), the crew are no longer employed under the Crew Agreement and the vessel becomes a "derelict". If the (former) crew members subsequently manage to re-board and save the vessel, they do so as volunteers and may have a valid claim to a salvage reward.
