Duties of OSC
- Co-ordinate all SAR operations for facilities on-scene and shore.
- Obtain the search action plan or rescue plan from the SMC. Alternately prepare the plan if it is not otherwise available.
- Modify the search action or rescue plan as the situation on-scene dictates, in consultation with, or advising, the SMC.
- Co-ordinate all on-scene communications.
- Monitor the performance of other participating facilities and ensure that operations are conducted safely, paying particular attention to maintaining safe separations among all facilities, both surface and air.
- Make periodic situation reports (SITREPs) to the SMC. The reports should include but not be limited to:
Weather and sea conditions
The results of search to date
Any actions taken
Any future plans or recommendations
Maintain a detailed record of the operation:
On-scene arrival and departure times of SAR facilities, other vessels and aircraft engaged in the operation
Areas searched
Track spacing used
Sightings and leads reported
Actions taken
Results obtained
- Advise the SMC to release the facilities no longer required.
- Request additional SMC assistance, where necessary (e.g., medical evacuation).
- Report the number and names of survivors to the SMC, providing the SMC with the identity of units with survivors on board along with details of which survivors are in each unit, destination of unit and its%u2019 ETA.
