a great circle track is the shortest distance , measured along the earth's surface , btween 2 poles. a great circle track cuts successive meridians at different angles b'coz meridians are nt parallel to each oder . the course, therefore, shud change slightly whilst crossing each meridia.practically at sea, the departure and arrival positions are plotted on a gnomonic chart and joined by a straight line . the vertex and suitable points are read off the chart and the navigator does mercator sailing from point to point thereby following the great circle track effectively ..!!
